HISTORY
Quietude is located in the Ossipee Mountains 2 hours north of Boston, Massachusetts, on what is left of an extinct volcano which erupted around 100 million years ago. Three volcanic eruptions created the famous ring dike of which the property now inhabits—there are only three mountain ranges in the world which are similar. The historic lodge and surrounding buildings sit on the upper part of the property's 60 acres, overlooking the lower lot of maples, oak, and pines towards the vernal Melvin stream and marshland.
The initials “H.M.B” adorn the exterior of the North facing chimney with year “1904” underneath. Those initials stand for H. May Baldwin, who contracted the famed Adirondack lodge in the same year and was known as “Baldwin Place” in its early years. She hired Boston architect J. Williams Beal to design the lodge, who 12 years later would return to the area and design the famed “Castle in the Clouds” just up the road from Quietude.
Perched over the valley for 120 years has invited some notable guests and accolades. It’s rumored that when former President “Teddy'“ Roosevelt was visiting the Plant Family in 1918, he spent time at Quietude hunting with then-owner Elbert Brock, and stayed in the North bedroom (now lovingly named the “Roosevelt Room”). The lower fields adjacent to the pond were once sprawling flower gardens and were chronicled in the Smithsonian Archives. It is also rumored the famed Fallon Cup— an award given during the amateur golf tournament in Massachusetts—sat for 20 years on the mantel of the West chimney.
Ember Escapes is only the fourth owner of the property. After sitting dormant for over 20 years, Ember Escapes carefully restored to its original intent: to help people escape to connect with each other and nature.
